Magnum Editions: Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom, Washington DC, USA, 1957

On May 17th, 1957, Bob Henriques photographed crowds of over 22,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C for the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom. By the mid-20th century, racial tensions were running high, with frequent demonstrations demanding voting rights and school integration met with an increase in violent bombings in Black communities between 1948 and 1965. Martin Luther King, Jr., and others that followed his non-violent approach, paved the way for eventual change. That day marked three years since the historic legal case, Brown v. Board of Education, and Martin Luther King, Jr. gave a speech that came to be known as Give Us the Ballot.
