Magnum Poster: Paris, 1953

Magnum Poster: Paris, 1953

In 1953, the young, provincial photographer Marc Riboud climbed the Eiffel Tower’s old spiral staircase with a Leica slung across his shoulder to photograph Zazou, the Eiffel Tower’s painter, at work. This iconic image appeared in Life Magazine that year — the very first of Riboud’s photographs to be published. A little while later, he received an invitation from Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa to join Magnum Photos. In his early thirties at the time, Riboud then set off to travel the world starting with the Middle East, Afghanistan and India in 1955, and went on to lead a prolific, and illustrious, career.
